Piano Lessons with Greg Jacobs

Hello! I am an Oakland-based pianist and educator. I primarily teach intermediate level students that want to advance to more challenging classical repertoire or gain knowledge and ability as Jazz pianists and well-rounded musicians. Beginners and advanced students are also welcome. No children under 5 years old.

I have been teaching private lessons for 12 years. The subjects covered are tailored to the needs and goals of the student and include proper piano technique, Jazz repertoire, improvisation, ear training, rhythm, music theory, sight reading, classical piano repertoire, and general musicianship skills.

The goal is to help the student develop an advanced holistic skill set that allows them to improvise, play the songs they love, perform, compose, accompany, work effectively in an ensemble, and eventually to meet the demands placed upon the modern day professional musician. Bud Powell, Art Tatum, Charlie Parker, and many more masters of the "American Idiom," as Duke Ellington called it, are a central focus of study.

My students have be accepted to prestigious music schools such as the New School in New York City.

Students are expected to meet once a week and have access to a piano or keyboard with which they can practice every day. Students would be expected to get a notebook of manuscript paper and a metronome, work hard, have fun, and purchase a few books over time.

The rate is $80/hour teaching from my home, $90/hour traveling to students near Oakland.

I prefer to meet with students once before starting regular lessons to evaluate where they are at with the instrument and the music.
